Whether you’re trying to become a master craftsman or you’re simply looking to tackle some projects at home, it’s important to make sure you’re equipped with the right tools for the job. They say a good craftsman never blames his tools, but what if you don’t know what the right tool is for the job?
The first step toward any successful project is having a plan and knowing what you will need to finish the project. Whether it’s a nail gun, a specific wrench or a power saw—you need to keep yourself equipped with the proper tools.
Start Here: Nail Gun
Gone are the days when a hammer and nail are needed to complete a project. The pair is more time-consuming than a modern-day nail gun.
Nail guns allow you to press the gun against the intended surface and pull the trigger. The force of the nail gun allows it to penetrate some of the hardest and deepest surfaces.
A good craftsman knows having a nail gun in your toolbox, with several different types of nails, will make your project that much easier.
Saw
When someone mentions a saw, most people think of the traditional hand saw with a long blade of teeth. But just like the hammer and nails, hand saws are a bit outdated for most jobs. There are many saw options on the market, so knowing which type you need depends on the project at hand.
Using a jigsaw gives you the freedom to make custom shapes or saw something with curves. It can easily be maneuvered to create a pattern of your choice. However, if you’re looking to create straight cuts, this isn’t the saw for the job.
If it’s straight cuts you’re after, you will do much better with a table saw. Although it isn’t very portable, table saws are great for cutting long straight lines, offer a variety of cuts, and will make your project much easier than using a hand saw.
Wrenches
A torque wrench comes in handy when you have a project where it’s important to not over-tighten or under-tighten a nut or bolt. It’s often used in combination with a socket wrench and provides the right amount of impact with a precise amount of torque to fasten.
You’re able to set the amount of torque you want to impact on the fastener, then start fastening. Once you’ve hit the desired torque, you’ll hear a click in the wrench that tells you you’re there.
An adjustable wrench is a one-ended wrench with jaws that can be adjusted to fit the fastener. The most common adjustable wrenches have jaws displaced to a 15-degree angle relative to the handle, just like a standard open-ended wrench. These wrenches are often ideal for plumbing and automotive repairs.
